WPA Medicine Staffing is seeking a Board Certified Cardiothoracic Surgeon for an ongoing locum tenens opportunity in Pennsylvania. This assignment is ideal for a surgeon seeking recurring long-weekend coverage with a well-established cardiac surgery program and strong specialty support.
Assignment Overview
- Specialty: Cardiothoracic Surgery
- Location: Pennsylvania
- Start Date: Ongoing Coverage Need
- Coverage Requirement: Approximately 9 12 Shifts Per Month
- Typical Assignment: Two long weekends per month plus additional coverage for physician PTO and holidays
- EMR: Epic Bridges
Schedule
- Coverage Hours: 7:00 AM 7:00 AM
- Typical Coverage Block:
- Thursday 7:00 AM through Monday 7:00 AM
- Providers must be available for consecutive coverage blocks
- Individual day coverage will not be considered
Practice Setting
This opportunity supports an established cardiac surgery program and provides coverage when the primary surgeon is unavailable.
The physician's daily responsibilities may include:
- Inpatient rounding
- Surgical cases
- Office and clinic visits
- Call coverage
On non-operative days, physicians are typically onsite from approximately 8:00 AM 4:30 PM. On operative days, physicians generally begin around 6:30 AM to accommodate OR start times.
Procedures & Case Mix
Typical cases include:
- Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG)
- Aortic Valve Replacement (AVR)
- Mitral Valve Replacement/Repair (MVR)
- General adult cardiac surgery procedures
Additional structural heart responsibilities may include:
- TAVR procedures
- TAVR clinic participation
- TAVR patient management
Call Responsibilities
- Call Coverage Required
- 30-Minute Response Time
- Combination of hospital and hotel-based call coverage
- Physicians are not required to remain in-house when not actively providing patient care
- Lodging accommodations provided for call coverage
Patient Volume
- Average Admissions While on Call: Approximately 2
- Minimal overnight inpatient issues
- Rare urgent dissections or overnight surgical emergencies
Weekend & Holiday Coverage
During weekends and holidays:
- No APP coverage available
- All orders and discharges are the responsibility of the covering physician
- OR staff are on-call and activated through the answering service
- All consults and patient care calls are routed directly to the physician

Requirements
- Board Certified in Cardiothoracic Surgery
- Active Pennsylvania Medical License Required
- Active Pennsylvania DEA Required
- ACLS Certification Required
- BLS Certification Required
- Minimum 2 Years of Experience
- Pennsylvania License Preferred
- IMLC Candidates Accepted
