Job description

General Summary

Serves as champion for clinical IT adoption and the involvement, education and support of clinical staff in clinical IT efforts. Works in partnership with the Chief Clinical Officer to ensure that health information systems support System clinical improvement efforts and integrate effectively with System IT infrastructure. Participates in the WellSpan Use and Standards for the EHR (USE) Committee. Devotes approximately fifty percent of time to active clinical practice.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:
  • Serves as clinical leader of the electronic health record for the System direction and collaboration of staff in the multiple IS areas with specific attention to clinical applications, clinical project management, clinical IT user education, knowledge management and E-Health applications.
  • Promotes the role and importance of clinical IT as a vehicle for improving clinical effectiveness, safety, efficiency and patient-centeredness within the System.
  • Researches and shares ?clinical IT best practices? from other health systems.
  • Builds physician, nurse and other clinician awareness, understanding and buy-in. Participates in the USE Committee, a Senior Vice Presidential chartered committee which sets standards for clinical practice and documentation within the WSH shared Electronic Health Record.
  • Works in various forums with clinicians to conceptualize, design, evaluate and support the adoption of clinical IT systems and to voice concerns, ideas and feedback on clinical IT system performance.
  • Works with clinicians, Clinical Informatics staff and IT staff to research new and emerging technologies and evaluate their ability to meet the needs of patients, clinicians and the health care system. Makes recommendations regarding technology adoption.
  • Assembles and oversees project teams consisting of operating unit leadership and clinicians, and support staff from Clinical Informatics and IT to plan, design and implement specific clinical IT applications.
  • For each project, works with clinical and management stakeholders regarding ?standards? related to the system being implemented, including: approved vendors and products; overall responsiveness of the system; reasonable failure rates; location, type and number of peripheral devices; desktop user interface; security and confidentiality; and training.
  • Provides support for the analysis and redesign of clinical work and decision making processes, making them more effective, efficient and clinician friendly.
  • Collaborates with IT staff to develop interfaces, design data bases, and ensure proper functioning of implemented systems.
  • Develops and carries out plans for training of physicians, nurses and other clinicians in the use of new and existing clinical IT systems.
  • Monitors and communicates progress of clinical IT projects to all stakeholders.
  • Ensures that clinical information projects are implemented on time, on budget and operate to the satisfaction of clinical users.
  • Maintains clinical practice in area of specialty, providing care in appropriate clinical settings.

Qualifications

Minimum Education:
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) Required or
  • Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) Required
Work Experience:
  • 5 years Practice experience. Required and
  • Licensed, board-certified physician in active clinical practice. Required
Licenses:
  • Licensed Medical Physician and Surgeon Upon Hire Required or
  • Licensed Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Upon Hire Required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of, and experience with, clinical information system design and use.
  • Possesses good grasp of clinical workflow in both inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Experience leading clinical information system or clinical improvement efforts.
  • Respected by peers as a clinician, leader and visionary.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with a strong collaborative, ?consensus building? management style.
  • Ability to function effectively with senior management.
  • Has a high tolerance for ambiguity.
  • Excellent interpersonal, group process and communication skills.
