CNC Lathe Machinist Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly experienced and detail-oriented Senior CNC Lathe Machinist to lead our precision manufacturing operations. This senior-level role requires advanced expertise in CNC lathe programming and operation using MasterCam, comprehensive setup and tooling knowledge, and proven ability to mentor junior staff. The successful candidate will drive manufacturing excellence through optimized processes, superior quality control, and innovative problem-solving while supporting both prototype development and high-volume production manufacturing. As a technical leader, you will mentor junior machinists, establish quality standards, and collaborate across departments to continuously improve cycle times, efficiency, and product quality.
CNC Lathe Machinist Key Responsibilities:
Programming & Machine Setup:
- Develop, edit, and optimize CNC programs using MasterCam.
- Set up CNC lathes for both prototype and production jobs.
- Design and implement custom fixtures and select tooling for optimal performance.
Production & Quality Control:
- Operate CNC equipment to produce high-quality components to exact specifications.
- Define inspection checkpoints and quality criteria for junior machinists and operators.
- Partner with the Quality Control team to ensure all products meet or exceed standards.
- Troubleshoot equipment or programming issues to minimize downtime.
- Maintain a scrap/rework rate below 2%, ensuring consistent product quality.
Leadership & Team Development:
- Collaborate with the Production Manager to streamline workflows and job routings.
- Mentor and train junior machinists, fostering a culture of skill development and accountability.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment, modeling best practices for the team.
CNC Lathe Machinist Required Skills & Experience:
- Proven expertise in CNC lathe programming and operation (MasterCam required).
- Extensive experience with setup, tooling, fixture design, and operation of CNC lathes-especially with live tooling and twin spindle configurations.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities related to machining processes.
- Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to train and guide team members.
- Familiarity with key production metrics (spindle utilization, cycle time, efficiency, etc.).
Physical & Technical Requirements:
- Ability to stand or sit for extended periods during shifts.
- Capability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks related to machine operation.
- Manual dexterity for handling tools and parts with precision.
- Proficiency in computer-based programming and documentation tools.
Performance Metrics:
- Improved cycle and setup times through optimized machining processes.
- Scrap and rework rates consistently under 2%.
- Meets or exceeds estimated time targets on job travelers and work orders.
