AB Contracting is a busy and growing public works general contractor that self-performs site/civil, concrete, masonry, and carpentry scope of work for municipal, county, and state projects. We deliver fast paced, high-quality, code compliant public projects.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a professional Cost Estimator to join our company and build an estimating department from the ground up. The ideal candidate has public works bidding experience, strong knowledge of site/civil, concrete, masonry, and carpentry scopes, and the ability to produce accurate, competitive estimates and bid packages for public-sector projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare detailed cost estimates and bid proposals for public works building construction projects.
- Quantify site/civil, concrete, masonry, and carpentry scopes; create material, labor, equipment, and cost breakdowns.
- Review plans, specifications, and addenda; perform takeoffs and scope analysis.
- Produce subcontractor solicitations, analyze bids, and recommend awarding strategies.
- Develop accurate unit pricing, assemblies, and contingency allowances; identify risk items and propose mitigation.
- Prepare cost reports, bid summaries, and value engineering suggestions.
- Coordinate with project manager, superintendent, and field teams to validate means/methods, crew production rates, and equipment needs.
- Ensure compliance with public bid requirements, bonding limits, prevailing wage, certified payroll, and contract provisions.
- Maintain and update historical cost databases, unit price book, and bid templates.
- Support preconstruction activities, client meetings, and post-bid buyout when awarded.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Estimating experience with demonstrated experience quantifying site/civil, concrete, masonry, and carpentry work.
- Proficient in takeoff tools - on screen take off or OLD SCHOOL paper and pencil.
- Strong math, analytical, and writing skills; attention to detail.
- Familiarity with public bidding processes, prevailing wage, bonds, and contract terms.
- Ability to read civil/architectural/structural/MEP drawings, specifications, and geotechnical reports.
- Valid driver's license; reliable transportation for site visits.
Preferred:
- Degree or certificate in Construction Management, Civil Engineering Technology, or related field.
- Experience with Excel (advanced) and estimating databases.
- OSHA 10/30, Certified Payroll familiarity, and public agency prequalification experience.
