Job description

Description A locum tenens opportunity is available for a Physician Assistant (PA) in Critical Care beginning August 1, 2026 at a high-acuity academic medical center. This role functions as a critical care responding clinician in the ICU, providing support in a structured, physician-supervised environment. The assignment includes a day/night rotation with rotating weekends and holidays, and requires strong ICU experience.

About the facility This is a large academic acute care hospital and teaching facility located in a major metropolitan center. The ICU is a 10-bed unit with an average daily census of approximately 7 patients, including adult and geriatric populations.

Clinical Scope

    • Afternoon rounding and follow-up care
Explicit exclusions (no procedures performed):
  • No intubations
  • No central or arterial lines
  • No ventilator management
  • No transplants
  • No echocardiography
  • No neuro head cases
  • No EVD placements
  • No complex stroke management

Job Responsibilities
  • Provide ICU support as a critical care PA responding clinician
  • Participate in daily multidisciplinary ICU rounds
  • Assist with patient care planning under physician supervision
  • Complete assigned clinical tasks throughout the day
  • Support ICU workflow during day and night rotations
  • Cover rotational weekends and holidays (minimum 2 weekends/month)
  • Work collaboratively with attending physicians and fellows
  • Maintain documentation and charting in Epic EMR
Qualifications
  • Physician Assistant (PA) required
  • Board Certified in Critical Care required
  • Active Massachusetts license required (no licensing support available)
  • ACLS or BLS certification required
  • DEA required
  • Minimum 2 years of ICU/critical care experience required
  • Must be eligible for credentialing (approx. 90 days)
Working Hours
  • Shift Options:
    • 6:00 AM 7:00 PM (day shift)
    • 6:00 PM 7:00 AM (night shift)
  • Structure: Day/night rotation
  • Schedule: Full-time with rotating weekends and holidays
  • Minimum weekend requirement: 2 weekends per month (Friday nights count as weekend)

Skills
  • Strong ICU critical care clinical judgment
  • Experience in medical ICU and med-surg ICU environments
  • Ability to function as a non-procedural responding clinician
  • Competence in:
    • ICU rounding and care coordination
    • Managing stable to moderately complex ICU patients
    • Task prioritization in high-volume academic ICU settings
  • Proficiency in Epic EMR
  • Strong communication with attending physicians, fellows, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Experience in academic/teaching hospital environments preferred
