CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER / CORPORATE CONTROLLER

Company Overview

A growing and highly respected construction and professional services organization headquartered in Columbia, South Carolina is seeking an experienced Chief Financial Officer / Corporate Controller to oversee the financial operations of two affiliated companies operating under common ownership.


The organization includes a commercial construction company and a professional architectural and design practice serving clients throughout the Southeast. This leadership role will provide strategic financial oversight, operational guidance, and accounting leadership across both businesses.

Position Overview

The Chief Financial Officer / Corporate Controller will be responsible for all accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, banking relationships, risk management, and strategic financial planning for both organizations.


The successful candidate will serve as a trusted advisor to ownership while providing leadership to accounting and administrative functions.


Key Responsibilities

Financial Leadership & Strategy


Partner with ownership and executive leadership to develop and execute financial strategies


Provide financial analysis and recommendations to support business growth and profitability


Develop annual budgets, forecasts, and long range financial plans


Monitor key performance indicators and provide actionable reporting to leadership


Support strategic planning, acquisitions, expansion initiatives, and capital investments


Accounting & Financial Management


Oversee all accounting functions including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, job costing, and general ledger activities


Ensure timely and accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting


Manage month end and year end close processes


Prepare and present financial statements and management reports


Maintain internal controls and accounting policies


Coordinate annual audits, tax filings, and compliance requirements


Construction Financial Oversight


Oversee construction job costing, work in progress reporting, revenue recognition, and project profitability analysis


Monitor project performance and provide financial insights to operations leadership


Review contract billing, change orders, and cash flow projections


Support project teams with financial reporting and forecasting


Cash Flow & Banking


Manage cash flow, working capital, and banking relationships


Oversee credit facilities, bonding relationships, and financing arrangements


Develop and maintain cash forecasting models


Monitor financial risks and implement mitigation strategies


Leadership & Team Development


Lead and mentor accounting and administrative personnel


Establish processes and procedures that improve efficiency and accuracy


Foster a culture of accountability, professionalism, and continuous improvement


Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field


CPA designation strongly preferred


10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience


Experience as a CFO, Controller, Finance Director, or similar executive level role


Strong knowledge of construction accounting, job costing, WIP reporting, and percentage of completion accounting


Experience supporting professional services, engineering, architecture, or consulting organizations preferred


Proficiency with accounting and ERP systems


Advanced Excel and financial modeling capabilities


Strong analytical, organizational, and leadership skills


Excellent communication and presentation abilities
